This January and February, the Rensselaer Library art wall is hosting the award winners of the Dec. 2020 “Celebrating Women” juried exhibit at the Prairie Arts Council.

This display features the photography of several local artists based on the theme, chosen to celebrate the 100th anniversary of women’s voting rights in the United States. The photos were originally displayed Dec.8, 2020-Jan.7, 2021 in the Lilian Fendig Gallery of the Carnegie Center.

“The sign of a great photograph is in the power of what it speaks to the viewer,” said juror Brienne Hooker. “What I learned from this show and from the artists who shared is that there are great women raising great women in our community. There are great women leaving a legacy of strength, love, creativity, adventure, grit and beauty.”

For those interested in seeing more, a virtual tour of the exhibit can also be seen online at youtube. https://www.youtube.com/aIRvQN6k7dQ

"And now she's 99..." by Bonnie Zimmer. My focus is on my mom, Doris, living out her 98th year, mostly in isolation during this pandemic, but "living" each day without complaint. As her primary connection to the outside world, I documented her contentment with her own company.

"Holding On" by Anne Kingma. At 95 my grandmother is holding on, especially as she struggles with dementia and Parkinson's Disease. I am physically holding on to her but also because of the memories we share. I addressed the theme here by showing a poignant moment of love shared across generations.
