All month long the sentiment around me has been “I’m so done with winter.” That’s all well and good, but is winter done with us?

I join in with the sentiment, and would love to simply jump forward to sometime in June.  Since time travel has not yet been perfected, (Or has it? There are books...) it might be best to simply plan ahead for better days.

As the cold winds blow, winter can be a punishing time for backyard birds.  Bird feeding is important in that it provides birds with the food, water and shelter they need in the winter when natural food is in short supply.

Last month, a group of school children entered the library and returned many books about each of the 50 states.  They were excited to share their new-found knowledge.

History buffs, students and the whole community are invited to the Rensselaer Library in January to honor one of the nation's best-loved presidents, Abraham Lincoln. Two special one-of-a-kind programs will pay tribute to the 16th President between Jan. 17-21.

Here we are, barely finished with the excitement of the Christmas season and I believe I am feeling, or at least anticipating the coming January “doldrums.” With that interesting word swirling around in my head, I immediately thought of the long, long ago burden of reading, and discussing in a high school literature class, the famous poem, "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner"

November has many days that we all celebrate and take part in, November 15 should be one added to that list.  America Recycles Day is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to encouraging Americans to recycle and buy recycled products.

Did you know that National Knock Knock Joke Day is observed on October 31?  Me either, but this holiday is for jokesters of all ages.  



 

Register to Vote at indianavoters.in.gov. Deadline is Tuesday Oct 9, 2018.

Tuesday, September 25, is National Voter Registration Day. This is a great time to update your voter registration information and/or register to vote.

The IN.gov Voter Portal, at indianavoters.in.gov, has made this process into a simple online form that takes only a couple of minutes to use.

If you haven’t visited the Jasper County Public Library recently, September is a great month to start.

During the month of September, all three branches of JCPL are celebrating Library Card Sign-Up Month by offering a small gift to all new JCPL library cardholders, as well as weekly drawings for current cardholders who check out items during the month.

The new school year is fast approaching along with the excitement of your kids seeing their friends and teachers again.  After enjoying some time off from math and science it’s time to get back into the swing of things.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – A Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) will open Tuesday, June 12, in Rensselaer to help Indiana flood survivors in Jasper, Pulaski and White counties. The DRC hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

No doubt I’m not in the minority in believing Spring was terribly hesitant to arrive here in Indiana this year. But indeed it has, and we are now again enjoying those outdoor activities we put aside for way too many months.
