Are you ready for the unexpected?

National Preparedness Month (NPM) is an observance each September to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies that could happen at any time.

Celebrate 30 years of the Rensselaer Library with your artwork

This November the Rensselaer Library will be celebrating it’s 30th Birthday!

We are asking local artists of all ages and skill levels to help celebrate this momentous occasion by creating a piece of artwork that will be displayed in the month of November through mid-December.

Tony Award-winning performer, actress, singer-songwriter, and philanthropist Idina Menzel and her sister, author and educator Cara Mentzel, have been named honorary chairs of Library Card Sign-Up Month.

Library services upgrade planned for this weekend

We at the Jasper County Public Library will soon be migrating our ILS (integrated library system) - our computerized inventory - to a newer version. We are anticipating a smooth transition; however, some things will be different or unavailable during this migration and some things may look and work differently after the migration.

Are you ready for National Sandwich Month?

Surprise! August is National Sandwich Month! According to www.nationaldaycalendar.com, the Wheat Flour Institute established August as National Sandwich Month in 1952. I think August is an appropriate month for this celebration since kids will be heading back to school soon and packing lunches will once again become a daily chore.

Don't get the blues; July is national blueberry month

What’s the best way to eat a blueberry? Well, that can depend on how you’ve enjoyed them in the past. A rather unpleasant memory I have is picking little blueberries off a bush in the sweltering heat and thinking, “I am never going to be able to pick a whole bucket of these things!”

Oh, my aching back! Lots and lots of bending, but the garden is finally planted.

I probably took on more than I should have and am now contemplating a much different approach for next year.
