Good reads @ JCPL

Plenty of vacations taken through the years stand out in my mind. Isn’t it always nice to get away? Nicer, still, to get home and just enjoy relaxing with your family.

Some folks like adventure; some like scenery; others just enjoy the thrill of seeing something different.

Learning new things is daunting; following directions is not my strong-suit. Discovering, however, that You-Tube contains so many useful tutorials, mostly made by real people, I have come to depend on this quick, concise video format to learn how to complete a variety of tasks.

One morning as I ventured into the home of my daughter and four grandchildren, I was greeted by one of their two cats. Asking my nine year old granddaughter where Sugar had been that morning, she replied, “Oh, she was probably out hunting mice, you know, getting as many as she can before hunting season is over.”

One of my favorite games is Trivia Crack. Am I good at it? Not really, but it’s fun trying to remember what I learned in geography, history, science, & art, and how much I pay attention to the world of entertainment and sports.

American pianist, conductor and composer, David Burge had it right when he said, “Yes, the English language can be weird. It can be understood through tough, thorough thought, though.”

Though the thought behind this tough sentence might be thorough, the toughest thought, is that although thorough, it may be true, through and through.

It is said that no two snowflakes are alike. There is a scientific explanation for this phenomena; something to do with ice, molecules, hydrogen and oxygen. I am no scientist, but I do know that when it comes to the human race, no two people are exactly alike, either.

William Shakespeare, as a hipster, ponders books

I love words, and because I love words, I love books. In fact, I love books just as much as I hate math, and I hate math very much.

My checkbook knows this, and would actually be better off taking care of itself. Even calculators don’t help, mostly because calculators are only as good as their operators.

Dog dreaming about dog books

‘Working like a dog,’ ‘dog tired,’ ‘it’s a dog’s life;’ these phrases give me pause as I look over at both of my dogs, stretched out on a couch in each room, comfy and dreaming whatever dreams that dogs dream.

Kitten 'reading' a book.

Cats have nine lives; I grew up believing it to be fact. I have 2 cats; one of who is an excellent escape artist and can hide herself away in unknown spaces for any length of time she wishes not to be found.

“Outside of a dog, books are man’s best friend; inside of a dog it’s too dark to read,” quips comedian, Groucho Marx. Groucho, in all of his wisdom, sounds like he knows all about dogs. Groucho, in all of his wisdom, must know Harley, the black-lab-with-an-iron-gut-who-will-eat-anything, and I’m not kidding.

March is halfway over; it’s now the seventeenth. Around the bend comes April, with all events so neat.

For April is for poets, who express themselves with rhyme; they write about great loves and such, and feelings so sublime. The opening of April is really fun for fools; for the first day of this springtime month lets us break a million rules.

It is amazing how many times in one episode of ‘The Bachelor’ the word ‘amazing’ is used to describe something.

One of my kids’ favorite stories growing up was “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bay Day” by Judith Viorst. In this lovable story, Alexander wakes up with gum in his hair, his brother gets the box of cereal with the prize in it and so his terrible, horrible day begins.

Cartoon bee asks What's the Buzz?

What’s the ‘buzz?’ At the close of every year, I check out the most popular ‘buzzwords’ for the year; the words that have made it into Wikipedia and the dictionary, most of which I had never heard before. Apparently, this year is all about ‘localisation,’ defined as “movement toward localized appeal by consumers.”

In “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” by Laura Numeroff, you’ll meet a tiny mouse that turns out to be quite bossy, sending a little boy on one errand after another throughout the day. It starts with one, single cookie.
