Seward's Folly Celebrates an Anniversary

Last month, a group of school children entered the library and returned many books about each of the 50 states.  They were excited to share their new-found knowledge. 

Since in January, Alaska celebrates its hard won 60th anniversary to become our 49th state, I wanted to point out resources our libraries have about the state once known as “Seward’s Folly”. 

For instance, did you know Alaska was purchased from Russia for just $7.2 million in 1867?  At 2 cents an acre that seems a pretty good bargain.

So if you’re traveling there or are an armchair traveler, check out these library nonfiction books and DVDs or choose a book of fiction that will give you a sense of life in Alaska.

Special Days in September

There are plenty of things to do this month, in Jasper County and at your Library!

From the Little Cousin Jasper Festival in Rensselaer (Sept. 6-8) and the Sandhill Festival and Car Show in Wheatfield (Sept. 21) to the National Library Card Month and Banned Books week celebrations at the library (all month long), you can get out, see some entertainment, read some new books and maybe make some new friends.

Whether you are looking forward to cooler weather, or revelling in the hottest days of the year, the month of August holds plenty to do. Visit the state fair or get those last vacation days in, just be sure to stop by the library to grab a cool book in some cool air conditioning for those hot hot days.

Summer Reading continues this month with movies and crafts and programs for all ages. The fair happens July 13-19, and for many Jasper County kids and teens, the fair will be their home away from home for that week.

Story Time at the Fair returns!

Preschoolers who enjoy attending the Jasper County Fair are invited to take a break and hear stories and participate in other age appropriate activities during “Story Time at the Fair,” offered by the Children’s Department of the Jasper County Public Library.
