Special Days in September

There are plenty of things to do this month, in Jasper County and at your Library!

From the Little Cousin Jasper Festival in Rensselaer (Sept. 6-8) and the Sandhill Festival and Car Show in Wheatfield (Sept. 21) to the National Library Card Month and Banned Books week celebrations at the library (all month long), you can get out, see some entertainment, read some new books and maybe make some new friends.

September is

National Library Card Sign Up Month. Get ready for a lifetime of adventure and Get Your Library Card Here! (visit your local library for more information).

National Piano Month. Check out some music or a book about playing piano!

Children's Good Manners Month. Practice good manners this month with your new teachers and schoolmates, or at home.

Word of the month: Enigma. A mystery. Bryce thought spider webs, with their different shapes, were enigmatic.

September 6 Little Cousin Jasper Festival starts in Rensselaer. Look for us in the parade on Saturday!

September 9 It's National Grandparents Day. Invite your grandparents to the library for the day, or write them a card.

September 13 Roald Dahl, author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda and James and the Giant Peach, was born in 1916. Did you know? Each of these books have been banned by schools and libraries at some point in history. Ask at your library to find out why!

September 15 Tomie DePaola, author and illustrator of over 200 children's books is born in 1934

September 16 It's H.A. Rey's birthday. Have a Curious George day and be curious. Visit the Indianapolis Children's Museum online and solve Geo Mysteries with Rex the Dino Detective. Discover every day science mysteries at the Library of Congress!

September 21 Sandhill Festival and Car Show is today in Wheatfield!

September 22 Autumn Begins! Today is also Elephant Appreciation Day and Hobbit Day. (Our hobbit books and movies are in the main section of the library. Check with a parent before checking one out.) Visit wikihow.com for suggestions on Celebrating Hobbit Day. Use the What Tree is It? website to identify leaves found on a nature walk!

September 25 It's Shel Silverstein's birthday. Paint a picture from Where the Sidewalk Ends or another favorite poem!

September 26 John Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed, was born in 1775. Check out the Johnny Appleseed Festival Sept. 21-22 in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
