Just for Teens

There’s so much going on July within the region, there should be no reason to feel bored!

Of course Independence Day is on the 4th, with fireworks, parades, and barbeques. Check out Meg Geddes’ Fireworks In Indiana website to find a fireworks display near you all year long.

The Jasper County Public Library invites teens to “Spark a Reaction” with this summer’s Teen Summer Reading programs at each branch of JCPL.

Summer Reading volunteers serve ice cream at the program kick-off in Rensselaer.

Looking for something to do this summer? Need service hours completed for a school or community group? Want to spend time with friends? Or kids? Then consider becoming a volunteer at your local library for the Summer Reading Program.

books from the future - what could they be?

I have been lucky enough to get my hands on several advanced reader copies of soon-to-be-published teen books.  It is pretty awesome to have a book in your hands that no one else around you will have.  So here are some books that you should really be keeping an eye out for!

Last week we invited local teens and families to check out our old (outdated, ancient) technology for Teen Tech Week. Of the dozens of folks who stopped by, some remembered the tech from their own childhoods, others were seeing it for the very first time.

Stop by the library this and check out the special events for Teen Tech Week, March 9-15.  Each library will be offering something.

books and movie popcorn

There are several new movies coming out this year based on amazing teen books. If you haven't had a chance to read the books yet, now is the time.

You can find these and more on the shelves at your local library. In the meantime, here are the upcoming movie trailers:

Photo of girls with marker drawings on their hands: peace, a heart, smiley face

According to hash tags, 2013 was a year of natural disasters, celebrity deaths and blurred social lines. Maybe some of things are better left in the past, but each year as we look back on what happened, we can choose to remember what we want.

What will you choose to make the highlights of the year? What will you choose to remember as 2014 goes by?

Looking for a way to get in the holiday spirit? Did you know each location of the library has lots of holiday movies, CDs, and books?

Maybe you are looking for inexpensive gift ideas. Try our craft books, or cook books. Nothing says loving like lovin' from the oven, to quote a famous commercial from the 1980s.

Asa Butterfield controls virtual ships in the movie Ender's Game.

The sci-fi thriller Ender's Game, based on the 1985 novel by Orson Scott Card, is already in theaters this month, and Catching Fire, the middle child of Suzanne Collins

September is a busy month for you…and for the library!

Maybe you have cool technology at school or at home, or maybe your only access to technology is an old lab in the basement corner behind the filing cabinets in a disused bathroom with a sign on the door that says “beware of the leopard.” (Can you name that book reference?)

Whenever and however you are able to use technology, are you doing the wrong things with it?

We know you’re out there…you’ve been in the library all summer – reading our books, watching our movies, listening to our cds, looking at our magazines. So, where are you when school starts? I know you don’t like school so much that you spend every free hour flipping through your textbooks and figuring out how else to expand your scholastic knowledge.

This year, reading isn't just a fun way to explore new worlds or earn fun prizes. This year, some lucky patrons will be able to SLIME A LIBRARIAN at the end of summer reading.
