Music is a part of everyday life for people all over the world.  From movie soundtracks to albums, or vinyl as they are now called, you can listen to music by your favorite artists.  Music is just one of the many things we enjoy on a daily basis.  Just like everything else, music has evolved over time.  The way we access our favorite songs has developed over time as well.  Listening to music has become easier now than ever.

The phonograph was invented by Thomas Edison in 1877.  This was the first invention that allowed music to be recorded and played back.  Over time, technology continued to develop.  How many of the following do you remember?  The radio, 78 RPM record, LP record, AM transistor radio, cassette tape, the 8-track tape that you had to wait for your song to finish once it changed tracks.

Then we started getting more portable devices: the boombox, walkman, the compact disc Discman, and MP3 players.

Once we hit the 21st century, Apple came out with the iPod which allowed you to listen to songs for hours no matter where you were.

Now we are in the age of streaming services like Pandora and Spotify. You can pick and choose who and what you want to listen to at any time.  It is so interesting to see how early inventions have transitioned into the way we listen to music today.  Wouldn’t Thomas Edison be totally amazed!  It will also be fascinating to see what comes in the future.  So pick your choice of music options and keep listening to music your way.

And for those of you in possession of CD players, remember there are thousands of choices available at your local library from country to classical to today's pop hits and more.
